5 Can’t-Miss Holiday Events in Southern California

We have no snow in Southern California, and the sunshine may make it feel like the perfect 75 degrees, but decorations are popping up everywhere. There are so many special activities to enjoy with your family that we’ve pared the list to five of the most family-friendly.

Boat Parades

Millions of lights on decorated boats float through the water along Southern California’s coast. Bundle up  sitting and watching this SoCal event. Check out the harbor near you for  dates and times. Be sure you know the time when it will float by your location!

The Nutcracker

Time for dancing Sugar Plum Fairies and monkey kings performing sword battles!The following are special ballet performances for small children.  It is a grand way to introduce a little culture into a young child:

  • December 13, 2014 – Costa Mesa Segerstrom Center for the Arts
  • December 17, 18 – Irvine Barclay Theatre
  • December 10-21- San Diego Civic Youth Ballet at Casa Del Prado Theatre
  • December 5, 6 – special performance for children
  • December 12 &  14 – Glendale Alex Theatre
  • December 6, 7 – Special performance for children

Amusement Park Fun

Southern California is known for its amusement parks. Each celebrates the holidays in grand style. Visiting these parks during the Christmas season can be twice the fun, and provide really great photos of your kids!

  • Knott’s Merry Farm presents Christmas special ice show, parades, carolers
  • Disneyland makes memories magical during the holidays, including the addition of the cast of Frozen into the popular show “World of Color.

  • Universal Studios – all of these parks celebrate holidays with very special events, decorations, music, parades, and tons of fun.

Outdoor Ice Skating

Gliding over the ice can be a great event for memories, laughter and exercise, even if your children are clinging to your legs. Skating outside is twice as fun with sparkling holiday lights and music. Skate at Ice at Santa Monica or the extravagant wonderland, Chill, presented by the Queen Mary. This experience features ice-skating, ice slides, tubing, a holiday village, and a massive 9-degree ICE Kingdom of ice sculptures from tons of ice! What could be a more beautiful picture of winter in California than ice-skating next to the picturesque red peaked roofs and white sandy beach of Hotel Coronado? Ice skating under the Giant Wheel in Orange County Irvine Spectrum Center is a super fun activity for families. Don’t forget to wear gloves even if it is 70 degrees outside!

Special Light Displays

Lights are taking over the Dana Point Harbor in a brand new display called  Illumin Ocean. Towering light creations and tunnels transform the village.  The event is free for visitors for the 40 Nights of Holiday Lights. Festival of  Lights is held at the Mission Inn at  Riverside and is open to the public nightly between Nov 28 & Jan 6 to enjoy lights, decorations, visits to Santa, carolers, horse-drawn carriage rides and live reindeer! The San Diego Botanical Gardens host the Festival of Lights there from December 6 – 23, 26 – 30 and invite you to stroll through the wonderland in the garden, live music, horse-drawn wagon rides, Santa, and hot beverages.
